  • In Shanghai, no teaching experience is required – one does require an in-class CELTA/TESOL/TEFL certificate
  • Elsewhere in China, at least 2 years of teaching experience is required

South Africans:

Please note that due to recent updated requirements by the Chinese Immigration Authorities, South African passport holders are only eligible to apply for teaching positions in the north of China – in Beijing and Tianjin. If you are a South African who also holds a passport from one of the listed countries below, you will be eligible for teaching positions elsewhere in China.

South Africans require at least 2 years of teaching experience, after graduating with a bachelor’s degree, BTech or higher to qualify to teach English in China. If you do not have this experience, take a look at alternatives like teaching in South Korea, Vietnam or Thailand.

No Teaching Experience:

Native English speaking countries: U.S.A, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland

If you do not have any teaching experience, you are still eligible to teach English in Shanghai, provided you hold a Bachelor’s degree and an IN-CLASS CELTA/TESOL/TEFL certificate

Overview of eligibility requirements for English teaching positions throughout China:

  1. Native English speaker from one of the following countries: U.S.A, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland – South African passport holders can apply for teaching positions in Beijing and Tianjin
  2. 21 to 55 years old
  3. Bachelor’s Degree in any field
  4. At least 2 years of experience teaching English post-graduation is required for Beijing this includes teaching English as a second/foreign language and as a first language
  5. At least 2 years of teaching experience in any subject post-graduation is required elsewhere in China, except in Shanghai
  6. No prior teaching experience is required in Shanghai but one does require an IN-CLASS CELTA or 120-hour TESOL/TEFL certificate
  7. A CELTA or 120-hour TESOL/TEFL certificate or equivalent is required to teach everywhere in China – this can be completed online or in-class

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct classroom lessons according to our school partner’s methodology.
  2. Prepare and teach classes in center or online as scheduled.
  3. Give constructive feedback to students
  4. Help students reach the level of English established in their learning objective.
  5. Provide advice and assistance to students, in and out of the classroom.
  6. Be flexible to teach in multiple centers within the same city.
  7. Promote and preserve a pleasant and courteous atmosphere in the Center.

  1. Submit an enquiry form to receive all the program information and to set up an Information Session with our Program Manager
  2. Meet with our Program Manager on Skype or over the phone to go through all the program information, the eligibility requirements and application process, and all your questions
  3. Submit your application
  4. We will inform you within 3 days if you have been accepted for an interview with our school partner in China
  5. If accepted, interviews will be scheduled with our school partner. Two interviews will take place over Skype at different times:
    1. The first interview will be with the Head of Recruitment in the region you are interested in being placed in. This is an informal interview where you will be given more information on the school you’ll be teaching at, the placements available, and be asked a few routine interview questions to make sure that you are a suitable candidate for a teaching position in China with TravelBud’s school partner. Nothing needs to be prepared for this interview.
    2. If the first interview goes well, you will then have a second interview where you’ll have to prepare a lesson plan to present. The lesson plan needs to be well prepared to ensure you get offered a position at the language center. You will be given guidelines for your lesson plan after the first interview so that you have enough time to prepare for the second interview
  6. If the second interview is successful, you will receive an offer letter 1 to 2 days later
  7. You will need to sign and return the offer letter to our school partner. Thereafter, you will receive a welcome letter to work as an English teacher at a private language center in China
  8. You will then need to gather all the required documents in order to apply for your Chinese “Z” visa required to legally work as an English teacher in China.
  9. The following documents are required and you will receive guidance and assistance in obtaining everything – medical check, Criminal Background Check (apostilled), degree (apostilled), and two reference letters
  10. Once you have sent through all the above documents to our school partner, they will submit everything to the local immigration department to start with the visa process – this can take 30 to 40 days
  11. Once your visa has been issued, you can book your flight to China
  12. Arrive in China and embrace the life-changing experience that awaits you!
